Erich Griessler, Head of Reseach Group Techno-Science and Societal Transformation on RRI in Horizon Europe
Our guest in this week's Responsible Innovation Story is Erich Griessler, Head of Research Group 'Techno-Science and Societal Transformation' at the Vienna-based Institute for Advanced Studies. He leads the biggest RRI project in Horizon 2020 – the New HoRRIzon, project, which unites researchers, managers, policymakers and citizens to take stock of RRI practice and set the stage for upcoming strategies. For Erich Griessler, RRI needs to prove its value in research and innovation practices.
“Showing practical benefits to researchers and funders is still one of the biggest challenges for RRI.”
What are the first findings and learnings made in New HoRRIzon?
“We found many people who share the RRI vision. In fundamental research, however, many still believe that research excellence automatically creates beneficial impact.”
What can we learn for RRI in the upcoming Horizon Europe program?
“It is too early to mainstream RRI across the entire program. First, we would need to institutionalize it.”
Our most important insights from this interview with Erich Griessler:
- Responsible Research and Innovation resonated widely in Horizon 2020.
- However, when it comes to implementing RRI in research and innovation projects, the concept still needs to prove its practicability.
- Only if we find concrete success stories and an institutional home, will RRI prevail in Horizon Europe.
