Louise Beltzung on challenges and opportunities of the growing Smart Toys market
Our guest in this week's Responsible Innovation Story is Louise Beltzung from the Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunication. In her role as Senior Researcher on Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Gender, she has intensively studied Smart Toys. For her, it is all about shared norms and values.
“Pre-programmed Smart Toys might easily give answers that do not reflect the value system of the parents.”
However, many parents underestimate the technological capabilities of smart dolls and teddy bears.
“When parents buy a smart doll, they think about a doll and less so about a full-fledged computer.”
Our most important insights from this interview with Louise Beltzung:
- The growing Smart Toys market accelerates the digital experiences of our children.
- However, many toys come pre-programmed and do not necessarily reflect the views and values of parents.
- If we think about smart toys as an integral part of a smart home system, we will find promising ways to align the value systems of both the intelligent toys and the parents.
