Paul Hofheinz on risks and remedies of Artificial Intelligence

Our guest in this week's Responsible Innovation Story is Paul Hofheinz, president of the Brussel-based think tank the Lisbon Council. To gain the full picture, he has spent the past months talking to leading AI programmers and engineers all over the globe. After talking to the top-level experts, Paul Hofheinz is convinced that AI is never going to replace human cognitive processes, such as empathy or ingenuity.

“AI is like a bulldozer. It can lift enormous amounts of material, but it cannot plan and construct a building.”

Our most important insights from this interview with Paul Hofheinz:

  • Even though AI mimics neural networks, it is not going to exceed human intelligence.
  • However, in many sectors, AI powered applications can help to augment human decision-making.
  • We need strong, comprehensive regulations to ensure that the unprecedented potentials of AI remain in society´s interest.
