Helmut Spudich on risk and remedies of using personal data to combat Covid-19

Our guest in this weeks' Responsible Innovation Story, Helmut Spudich, is the perfect interview partner to talk about the intersection of telecommunication and privacy:

  • He was Vice President of Corporate Communications and Responsibility of T-Mobile Austria, one of the largest telecommunications provider in the country.
  • He worked for many years as a journalist of innovation and economics for one of the biggest Austrian newspapers.
  • He just authored a book on the challenges of using smartphone data for governmental or public purposes.

For Spudich, the telecom sector has an important role to play in combating Covid-19. Location data from telecom networks could provide a useful starting-point for contact tracking – if different providers worked together closely and if legal regulations for large-scale location tracking are clarified.

“Telecommunication networks are built on resilience. Surviving difficult situations is part of their DNA.”
